American scrap prices went up by US$113/ton during the beginning of December, even though the demand is still weak and some mills have not only cut output but also lowered stock.

Market participants still remain optimistic for scrap price because steel mills will have to purchase some after new year. Besides, the scrap supply is not much due to weather problem and reduction of automotive output, the price will hike up a little.

Eastern American traders forecast that the scrap price will at least increase by US$15/ton but Western America anticipates US$49/ton.

Base metals including copper advanced Monday in a short-covering rally triggered by a surprisingly strong US housing data.

Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange jumped 6.6 per cent to a high of $4025 a tone before closing at $4020. In early trade, the metal, mainly used in the construction and power industries, hit a three-year low of $3590 down 4.9 per cent against Friday’s close of $3775.

A US government report showed a surprise increase in September new home sales, tempering worries about prospect of a deep recession.

Top consumer China’s implied copper consumption rose 5.3 per cent in September from the previous month, but collapsing prices suggest demand is softer than it appears.

Aluminium recovered at the close, up at $2038/2039 a tonne versus $1975 on Friday. The metal, used in power and construction, earlier declined to $1925, its lowest price since October 2005.
